About the Item

Bargueño or Toledo desk. Walnut, ebony, boxwood, bone, wrought iron fittings with other polychrome. Spain, 17th century. Rectangular desk or wastebasket of covered sample made of wood and decorated to the outside with a geometric composition combining woods in different tones and bone, which, in addition, enhances the fittings present on the sides (trimmed, with simplified geometric and vegetable shapes around the handle, which has also been decorated), in the front (closures with flange on the sides and lock with key lock in the center of the furniture; trimmed, with combinations similar to the sides, the central being more complicated and elaborate, which It has more moving lines) and in the corners. Inside, the geometric composition mentioned on the back of the lid is repeated; the drawers are divided into three streets and three levels in general, with a chapel with a door in the center, which opens by key. The lower and upper levels of drawers are narrow; the central strip is divided into a level of drawers above (similar to the lower and upper), and two levels on the sides of that central "chapel". Giving a total of thirteen drawers with openwork teardrop fittings, all fronts are decorated with striking geometric compositions, combining these same materials in different shades. An outstanding specimen, on a box office, dated in the 17th century and preserved in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, has a sample divided into two levels, with a series of drawers in a composition that, in some details, reminds of the present furniture although they belong to different schools. In the Victoria and Albert Museum in London there is another desk dated in the second half of the 16th century that also mixes influences from different backgrounds, such as this one. Interestingly, remember in certain details of the geometric decoration to a desk of the XVI-XVII centuries with wood and bone taracea and bronze fittings of the Furniture collection of the MAD of Santiago de Chile. It is also necessary to remember examples such as the desk in ebony, walnut and pine of the 17th century that is preserved in the Lope de Vega House Museum in Madrid (although it presents later work), in addition to other pieces of institutions such as the National Museum of Decorative Arts of Madrid or the House of El Greco de Toledo. • Size: 96 x 40 x 54 cms.
