French 19th Century Belle Époque Period Mahogany, Brass and Ormolu Desk

About the Item

A striking and very high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. Belle Époque period Mahogany, brass and ormolu desk after a model by Jean-Henri Riesener and attributed to François Linke. The one drawer desk is raised by elegant square tapered legs with fine mottled sabots and delicate berried laurel fillets leading up to mottled top caps and beautiful intricately detailed swaging blooming flower garlands tied with a bow. Above each leg are remarkable pierced block rosettes flanking the straight frieze which displays one large single drawer decorated with an exceptional array of richly chased swaging floral garlands at each side and stunning Rinceaux shaped scrolled designs adorned with acanthus leaves with winged cherubs centering a smooth cabochon all above delicate Coeur de Rai and interlocking ormolu fillets. The back and sides are decorated in a similar manner with the sides displaying a central Bacchanalian mask flanked by cornucopias and additional lovely scrolled movements. Above is a fitted brown gold tooled leather top framed within a Mahogany border with fine inlaid brass fillets and a superb mottled ormolu Coeur de Rai band at the border. François Linke (1855-1946) Renowned 19th century Parisian Ébéniste. Linke created historical interpretations of Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. He displayed at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 where he received a Gold Medal.
