About

An outstanding French Art Deco period wrought iron and marble partner's desk by Paul Kiss, circa 1920s. Rectangular top with clipped corner variegated cream colored marble. Pierced and hammered wrought iron frame with open marble topped shelves. Kneeholes and drawers on both sides. A wrought iron desk from the period is a rare find.

Hungarian born Kiss (1885-1962) settled in Paris at a young age, where he worked with French ironworkers Edgar Brandt and Raymond Subes. He opened his own showroom in Paris, where he produced ironwork of the highest technical quality. His work was shown at the Society des Artistes Decorators in 1925, as illustrated.

Reference: Henri Clouzot, "La Ferronnerie Moderne" ("Modern Ironwork"), a portfolio from 1927. Inspired by the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925, which gave the Art Deco movement its name, Clouzot compiled photographs of the greatest ironwork of the day, by the most acclaimed designers, including this desk by Paul Kiss.
