French Napoleon III Rosewood Pedestal Desk with Pull Out Secretary, circa 1865

About the Item

This exceptional desk with secretaire dating from 1865, during the time of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French (1852-1870), displays an extraordinary level of craftsmanship & is a distinctive work of French cabinetry that displays a high level of both form & function. The joinery, selection of wood & design are all exquisite. The shaped cylinder top pulls out and folds down revealing a camel-colored, leather-inset writing surface with three small interior drawers. All of the desk drawers lock when the shaped cylinder top is closed. One drawer has a separate key that opens to a strong box that is keyed separately for valuables. The top opens to reveal letter & paper cubbies, and a slide-out tray. The bottom offers a total of nine storage drawers; the rosewood pulls are the original ones. The knee hole is wide & very ample for comfort. The exterior back is completely finished to allow the desk to float in the room or back-up to a floor to ceiling window.
