Guillerme & Chambron, Rare Oak Desk Model "Matignon" for Votre Maison", 1960.

About the Item

Guillerme et Chambron, Rare Oak Desk Model "Matignon" for "Votre Maison", France , 1960. Excellent condition. Here is a free-standing oak desk by French designer duo Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron. This important executive desk shows an interesting variation of features. Features such as two folding leaves that extend the desk top of 40 cm each side (15,75 in each), making this piece highly functional and versatile in its use. The two leaves are on the same height as the desk top when they are unfolded for a total width of 260 cm. (102,36 in W) The desk is equipped on each side with two pivoting drawers fitted with inlaid shelves, these two pivoting elements are held by a remarkable quality of brass screws. Instead of hiding these 4 brass screws which have a structuring function, the designers chose to make them very visible and integrate them fully into the design of the desk. Very atypical, on the front, we also find a secret compartment hidden in the desk structure by a folding element that opens downwards, held in place by two leather straps. Finally, the top is inlaid with a brown leather writing board. We kept the original brown leather writing board as we think it has an amazing patina of use. (Could be replace by a new leather with the color of your choice on simple demand) This desk is a great demonstration of the fine craftsmanship that characterizes the work of the french company "Votre Maison" and the french designer duo Guillerme and Chambron. Bio : Jacques Chambron (1914-2001) and Robert Guillerme (1913-1990) started the company "Votre Maison" postwar. Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule and graduated first in his class in 1934. Meanwhile, Jacques Chambron graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Reims. The two designers met and became friends during the Second World War. After the war, in 1948, Chambron resigned from his job as a painter and decorator in Paris to move to Lille, in the North of France and join Guillerme. A year later, the two met cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, who was the owner of a workshop close by. It was during this meeting, that the three men decided to create their own company, "Votre Maison" was born a year later in 1949. In french “Votre Maison” means “Your Home”, which became the soul of the company. Throughout their career, ‘Votre Maison’ produced over two thousand models, leaving a lasting mark in the world of design.

After studying at the Camondo School in Paris, with Maxime Old as a teacher, Pierre Paulin incorporated Marcel Gascoin’s studio in 1953. That same year, he exhibited his first designs which met a great success, at the “Salon des Arts Ménagers”. In 1954, Thonet France started to manufacture his creations. In 1970, he started a collaboration with “Mobilier National” for whom he designed “Amphis” sofa, made out of three draught excluders built in and waving. Consecration came in 1971, when he took on the realisation of President Georges Pompidou’s private apartments at the Élysée Palace, assuring long-term recognition. François Mitterrand also drew on him in 1984, to conceive the interior design of his presidential office. Later, he renovated the dining room for the President Jacques Chirac. In 1975, he founded along with his wife the AD/SA agency, in which Roger Tallon associated in 1984.
