Italian Renaissance Revival Antique Secretary Desk with Bookcase, 19th Century

About the Item

This is a most active piece, highly carved across every surface with crisp and precise figural representations. The carving quality is quite excellent, particularly in the raised relief carving on the drop lid surface and the drawer. Large humorous satyr figurals flank the pair of bookcase doors, these with arched bevelled glass framed within repeating floral borders with acanthus spandrels. The vivid and wonderfully worn walnut is mellow and most attractive throughout. The slant front opens with the key to reveal an open writing area backed by four drawers and two compartments, beneath which rests a single large drawer. This entire structure is raised over winged griffin figurals on either side resting on a single large lion’s paw. A piece with character and a unique spirit, this finely carved work took an incredible amount of time to complete. It breaks down into several pieces: the top, the bottom, the putto figural that removes from the top, the crest carving the putto rests within and the carved-inserts that rest at the joint of the top to the bottom on either side. This is a statement piece, one that adds great interest to a room and brings liveliness to a setting. Measurements: 94 1/4” H (total height) x 40 3/4” W x 23 1/4” D; 86 3/4” H (without putto finial); upper section is 43 5/8” H, lower section is 38 3/8” H; 29 7/8” H to top of writing surface when opened (writing surface is 18 5/8” D x 24 1/2” W) Condition Report: Sunbleached surface with cracking, carving and moulding loss, surface wear, gap where the right insertable side carving touches the bookcase, missing moulding on inside corners of both feet (left foot with an old piece of moulding inserted here, not matching), gaps in boards from shrinkage over time including where the writing surface meets the interior drawers and the bottom board of the large drawer, loss to floral carving of one of the insertable side carvings, retains one original key, loss to upper right corner crest moulding. The desk is gorgeous and does not require restoration to be fully enjoyed. it just has some roughness from age and use, this best reviewed by going through the slideshow of images that we have available upon request (over 100 images).

GEORGE III MAHOGANY DIMINUTIVE SECRETARY WITH BOOKCASE England, circa 1780 Item # 307PZN13W A very fine secretary desk of diminutive proportions, this fabulous form features an upper bookcase with a cove-molded cornice over a pair of glazed doors with eight panels each, these divided with original astragal moldings, opening to reveal an adjustable three-shelf space bookcase. The doors are beautifully embellished with fluted pilasters boasting Ionic capitals that are exquisitely detailed with rich undercutting. The lower case features a brushing slide situated over five rows of graduated drawers, the second from the top cleverly fitted with a green baize writing surface that pushes back to reveal storage space beneath while the faceted glass inkwell bottles (one missing the lid) and double trough pen tray are situated along the right side. The timbers selected for the case are above reproach and present with a ruby hue throughout that is incredibly appealing, this finished under a glowing silky French polish to the mahogany veneers throughout.
