About the Item

Monumental antique bureau plat (desk) in the French Louis XV style after the original design by Charles Cressent (1685-1768), 80 by 38 by 32.5 inches, finely crafted with kingwood and tulipwood veneers with finely modeled, cast and gilt bronze mounts, and a tooled and gilt inset leather top in burgundy red. With three drawers and simulated drawers on rear. Carcass crafted from oak and pine. Drawer stamped with paper label of the furniture retailer, Georg Kofoed's Mobeletablissement of Copenhagan, Denmark. Top of carcass inset with plaque of the maker or prior owner, "PREVOST Rue St. Antoine 195" (Paris). An example of this model created by Cressent, circa 1735, resides in the permanent collection of the Getty Museum. The artist became a master sculptor in 1719 and was known for his exceptional ormolu castings, but he also was an accomplished ebeniste. His most prestigious customer was the Regent and duc d'Orleans, Philippe II.
