About the Item

A stunning Vernis Martin vitrine cabinet, glazed paneled doors with painted gallant scenes and exquisite ormolu mounts. Four beautiful hand painted panels “H . Martin “ signed by the family descendants of the Martin brothers (in the court of Louis XV) the first importers of lacquer painting who kept the art through the generations. Two central panels with romantic courting couples and the other two landscape scenes. Veneered wood, bronze mounts, curved glass with satin lined interior with two glass shelves. Vernis Martin. The Martin brothers were famous painters, gilders and varnishers who also worked for Louis XV in Versailles. Their dynasty lasted for almost eight decades, during which time they practiced in many fields, producing toilet sets, box sets, mirrors, small objects, cases, furniture, wood ornamentation, carriages and coaches. The Martins’ reputation and excellence overshadowed a great number of other painter-varnishers of the time they created a stylistic resurgence, associated with the technique of peinture à l’huile vernie-polie, which was directly connected to the art and style of the time.
