Gorgeous Mid-Century Modern Sligh-Lowry petite walnut veneer 6 drawer desk with cane front and black painted walnut handles. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There is a faded spot from what looks to have been a desk pad and possibly a water ring on the top of the desk. Our studio lights accentuate the faded area but under different lighting it is not as prominent. There were 2 places on the front where the veneer was damaged that we have repaired. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1960’s. This is a fantastic walnut petite desk by Sligh-Lowry!! It features a gorgeous cane front, and it has six drawers total… one in the center which has a built-in carved pencil holder, three single drawers on the right side, and two drawers on the left consisting of a smaller drawer on top and although there’s a groove that makes it look like there are two lower drawers, in fact it is one lower file drawer complete with a file rack system below…all drawers feature black painted walnut handles. It is absolutely beautiful!! The top of the desk has a faded spot that you will see in the photos however, our studio lights really accentuate the fade… it’s not as prominent under different lighting and once you get your desk pad, laptop, monitor, and calendar spread across the desktop, you’ll hardly notice the fade. It is Mid-Century Modern in style, but we think it will blend in beautifully with just about any décor style and the cane front is so lovely you can float it in any room! This is JUST the desk you’ve been needing for your new home office or maybe your den needs a fresh new look? It would also look great in a college dorm. In 1940, Charles R. Sligh Jr. and Bill Lowry purchased a Zeeland, Michigan plant and formed Sligh-Lowry Furniture Company. This was followed by the purchase of the Grand Rapids Chair Company in 1945. The Ply Curves subsidiary corporation of Sligh-Lowry was established in 1948. The Grand Rapids Chair Company offered a complete line of case goods. Desks and occasional pieces were manufactured in the Holland and Zeeland plants. In 1957, Charles R. Sligh Jr. accepted a paid position as Executive Vice President of the National Association of Manufacturers while remaining Chairman of the Board of the furniture company until 1988. Beginning in the early 1990's, Sligh focused on the home office furniture market. In 2002, Sligh entered the home entertainment furniture market. Sligh sold the clock business to Bulova Corporation in 2005 to concentrate on home office, home entertainment and living area wall units. Charles R. Sligh Jr. died in 1997 at the age of 91. Sligh product designers were finalists in The American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD) annual Pinnacle Awards every year since inception in 1996 and won first place in seven of the years from 1996 to 2010. Handsome Mid-Century Modern smaller writing desk by the Robert John Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania featuring walnut cabinet with white painted steel frame and white laminate top. This is from their Steelwood collection. It desk is in wonderful restored condition. We have sanded and put a new finish on the walnut and the metal frame. The laminate has been cleaned and polished. There are still signs of age but nothing major. Please see photos, circa 1960s. This wonderful Mid-Century Modern smaller size office desk has been a real puzzle. It has taken much research and I’m still not sure I know about the Robert John Co. from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their tag says Makers of Contemporary Furniture and that this desk is. When I google them all I come up with is other pieces of furniture being offered that were made by them, but I can’t find any history on the company. And, several listings say the piece was designed by Robert John but made by Knoll. I have not found supporting evidence of that statement! No matter. This is a fabulous desk with a walnut box cabinet containing three equal size drawers that are adorned with cool black and white handles. It is surrounded by a white painted metal frame which accents the walnut wonderfully and a white laminate work surface. This was originally in an architect’s office. I can see why. It has awesome lines and is beautifully designed. This desk is just the right size for a home office. Not as big as an executive desk but a little bigger than a writing desk. Fabulous!
