About the Item

This Secrétaire à Abattant, crafted in the French Louis XVI style in the late 19th century, remains a striking example of neoclassical elegance and masterful craftsmanship. The rich mahogany veneers, with their beautiful, flowing grain, are complemented by intricate inlays of floral patterns in contrasting woods, which enhance the refined aesthetic of the piece. The drop-front desk opens to reveal a practical writing surface and organized compartments, making it both functional and a stunning focal point in any space. However, due to the movement of the underlying oak base wood, the veneers on the writing surface have separated at the center. This is a common issue in antique furniture, caused by natural shifts in wood over time. The overall structure of the piece remains strong, though, and this minor imperfection is part of the history that gives the piece character. The doors below conceal additional storage, and the fluted columns and decorative brass inlays enhance its stately presence. The piece rests on delicately tapered legs, which, while well attached, are quite fragile and should be handled with care to avoid stress on their slender form. In addition to the structural integrity of the secrétaire, the brass hardware and inlay work are in excellent condition, maintaining their original shine. Though the veneer on the writing surface shows signs of age and use, it does not detract from the overall charm and timeless appeal of this piece. Despite the delicate legs and veneer separation, this secrétaire remains an elegant addition to any room, offering both beauty and functionality with its neoclassical design and practical storage. 65h x 39w x 20d Knee height 32
