Transitional Style Gilt Bronze Mounted Roll Top Bureau

Transitional style gilt bronze mounted roll top bureau French, 19th century Measures: Height 121cm, width 135cm, depth 59cm This fine roll top bureau is of traditional form and demonstrates the best of the Transitional style. The desk features fine geometrical marquetry of kingwood and mahogany, all accented with deftly wrought gilt bronze mounts. The desk features a flat top above three drawers, below which is the roll top, which opens to reveal a writing slide, four drawers, and a cubbyhole. The shaped apron below contains five further drawers: one central with two pairs flanking. The desk is raised on cabriole legs mounted to the shoulders with classicised gilt bronze busts, while the remainder of the desk features an array of fine gilt bronze foliate mounts. The leather writing slide is monogrammed ‘P.M.’, while one of the drawers is indistinctly inscribed.

    Large French neoclassical style gilt bronze mounted bed French, late 19th century Measures: Height 143cm, width 147cm, depth 225cm This impressive bed is crafted in the neoclassical style from wood, gilt bronze, and red velvet. The bed features a large, shaped headboard, which is centred with a panel of red floral velvet, with the wooden structure of the headboard mounted with a host of gilt bronze mounts including rosettes and pomegranate finials. The footboard of the bed is similarly wrought and adorned, with the columnar sides set with gilt bronze floral garlands and the wooden surfaces veneered in a manner that reveals the grain of the wood. The sideboards of the bed are finished with red velvet. The bed is stamped for Grohé Frères.
