Transitional style gilt bronze mounted roll top bureau
French, 19th century
Measures: Height 121cm, width 135cm, depth 59cm
This fine roll top bureau is of traditional form and demonstrates the best of the Transitional style. The desk features fine geometrical marquetry of kingwood and mahogany, all accented with deftly wrought gilt bronze mounts. The desk features a flat top above three drawers, below which is the roll top, which opens to reveal a writing slide, four drawers, and a cubbyhole. The shaped apron below contains five further drawers: one central with two pairs flanking. The desk is raised on cabriole legs mounted to the shoulders with classicised gilt bronze busts, while the remainder of the desk features an array of fine gilt bronze foliate mounts.
The leather writing slide is monogrammed ‘P.M.’, while one of the drawers is indistinctly inscribed.
