Vintage MCM Art Deco Maple Colored Desk Black Accents American of Martinsville

About the Item

Stunning vintage mid-century modern or Art Deco with an Asian flair maple colored exotic wood desk by American of Martinsville. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. We have repaired the trim around the top edge and have given all the black edges a new coat of paint. But it still has a beautiful all-over patina adding to its vintage charm. There is a darkened area in the center of the back of the drawer cabinet which looks to be a stain, however, it is the color of the natural wood grain. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Early to Mid-20th Century. There are desks… and then, SOMETIMES, there are DASHING vintage desks like this one by American of Martinsville!!!!! This is an absolutely stunning desk comprised of a gorgeous maple colored exotic wood featuring a windowpane or shoji screen front with three drawers on the left side, a pull open door with red painted space & a shelf on the right, an asymmetrical top with black painted edges, a black cylindrical bar or stretcher in the knee hole, and four fabulous black painted splayed legs. It is INCREDIBLE!! Try as we may, we have been unable to find this line or collection made by American of Martinsville which lead us to believe that it could have been a custom-made piece. It has a marvelous all-over patina which we love and think just increases its classic vintage charm. Including a darkened area on the back of the drawer cabinet which we thought at first may have been stained, but it is in fact the color of the natural wood grain. Kind of a sultry, unique appearance. It is definitely going to make a bold statement in your home office, study, or den whether your design aesthetic leans to mid-century modern, Art Deco, or has an Asian flair. And because it is finished beautifully on all sides, it will float with an attractive presence in any room you choose. American of Martinsville was established in 1906 in Martinsville, Virginia by tobacco manufacturers, Ancil Witten, and Charles Keesee. Early on they produced only bedroom furniture. In the 1920s they expanded their production to include dining room furniture and by the end of the 1950s were vast in their offerings in purpose and style. With the expansion of travel and roadside motels, they began offering a mass-produced line for the many motels popping up across the country and continued this through the end of the 20th century. In 2000 they were acquired by La-Z-Boy Incorporated and today specialize in furniture for the hotel and healthcare industries. • MCM Desk by Robert John Co. Walnut & White Painted Steel Frame & Laminate Top
    By Knoll
    Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome Mid-Century Modern smaller writing desk by the Robert John Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania featuring walnut cabinet with white painted steel frame and white laminate top. This is from their Steelwood collection. It desk is in wonderful restored condition. We have sanded and put a new finish on the walnut and the metal frame. The laminate has been cleaned and polished. There are still signs of age but nothing major. Please see photos, circa 1960s. This wonderful Mid-Century Modern smaller size office desk has been a real puzzle. It has taken much research and I’m still not sure I know about the Robert John Co. from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their tag says Makers of Contemporary Furniture and that this desk is. When I google them all I come up with is other pieces of furniture being offered that were made by them, but I can’t find any history on the company. And, several listings say the piece was designed by Robert John but made by Knoll. I have not found supporting evidence of that statement! No matter. This is a fabulous desk with a walnut box cabinet containing three equal size drawers that are adorned with cool black and white handles. It is surrounded by a white painted metal frame which accents the walnut wonderfully and a white laminate work surface. This was originally in an architect’s office. I can see why. It has awesome lines and is beautifully designed. This desk is just the right size for a home office. Not as big as an executive desk but a little bigger than a writing desk. Fabulous! Fabulous style! Fabulous size! Fabulous condition! Make it yours. Attn: Since originally writing this I have obtained three vintage brochures...

Circa 20TH Century. MARAVILLOSO!!!! This art deco style entry desk or bar was made by IMS S.A. in Bogota, Colombia and is functional, versatile, and unusually unique. It is comprised of two separate pieces. Both are solid mahogany. The base has a gorgeous Greek Key design on one side and it’s plain on the other so you can change the look to be decorative or more transparent. The countertop is a flip open design with brass ring pulls and brass hinges that open to a large storage area for supplies of your choice. There are two large drawers on each lower side and two smaller drawers above the countertop lined with laminate inside and mahogany veneer. Because it is counter height, it would be perfect as a walk-up bar. Or use it as an entry desk in your home. It would also make an awesome check in counter at a restaurant, check out space at a boutique or nail...

Handsome pair of chests from American of Martinsville and Merton Gershun’s Accord line of furniture with the signature X’s and asymmetric handles. One is the long walnut dresser with three drawers and cane doors and the second is the three-drawer bachelor’s chest. Two separate pieces but butted together make one long marvelous piece. We are pricing them as a set. Both are in wonderful restored condition. However, they are not without signs of age and use having an overall beautiful age patina which includes small nicks, scratches, and imperfections but nothing major. Please see photos, circa mid-20th century. Oh my! If you could ever say X marks the spot for a piece of furniture…you can say it with this pair. Note the metal signature crosses in their tops and their fabulous asymmetric or staggered handles. These gorgeous chests are from the Accord collection produced in the mid-20th century by American of Martinsville and designed by Merton Gershun. One piece is the longer dresser which is comprised of a bank of three drawers next to three doors with cane inserts. One door opens to the left and the other two doors bi-fold open to the right revealing three interior drawers. This dresser alone is wonderful but paired with the matching bachelor’s chest, which has the same bank of three drawers as the dresser, and butted next to the doors, making it one extra long cabinet...
