About the Item

Louis XV dresser, signed Bon Durand, Paris, 1770s. Made of walnut and other fine woods. Cut-out pedestal with hanging apron with central fire-gilded bronze fittings in the form of leaf and tendril, corpus with three drawers in the front with triple fields by running ribbon and thread inlays, richly designed handles and key plates in fire-gilded bronze in the form of asymmetrical leafwork, original marble top with Fine marbling. The renowned French ébéniste (master cabinetmaker) Bon Durant worked in Paris at the end of the 18th century. During his ascent to masterhood before the revolution, he worked in the Rue de Charenton in the Passerelle district. He worked in particular for furniture dealers such as Pierre Migeon and Denys Genty and for other artists such as Bonnemain and the Presle brothers, who commissioned him to make several pieces of mahogany furniture. His stamp can be found on Louis XV furniture and some Régence objects - dressers, secretaries, bookcases - which express his ability to design veneers. He also used Fine and detailed flower marquetries. Furniture in transition style or Louis XVI, often in mahogany, was also made in his studio. Durant was an extremely talented ébéniste, who created furniture of the highest quality. (Research and text: Art historian Jens J.
