Rare Art Deco Streamlined Moderne Dresser by Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky
By Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky
Located in Lafayette, IN
Rare streamlined dresser by Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky for Red Lion Furniture. The count was famous for his wonderfully stylized Industrial designs and worked with major automakers of the day like Auburn, Cord, Packard, Tucker and the White Truck Co. This dresser features wonderful, asymmetrical streamlined lines, unique round drawer pulls, and Stunning Circassion Walnut Veneer. This dresser was originally designed by Sakhnoffsky for display in the "House of Tomorrow" during the 1939 New York World's fair! Some more info on Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky: Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky was born in Russia in 1901, the son of an Advisor to Tsar Nicholas II. Following the Russian revolution he escaped to the continent and began a career as an automobile designer emigrating to America in 1929. In America he designed many famous automobiles and his drawings of futuristic cars appeared in Esquire Magazine from 1934 on. In furniture he advocated streamline design as in the Bloomingdale’s Department Store furniture shown at the 1939-40 World’s Fair in New York. Outside automobiles and furniture, de Sakhnoffsky also created designs in the areas of aircraft design (Sabca), boat design (feather-Craft), Bike design (Murray), watch design (Gruen), and radio design (Emerson). This desk represents the perfect culmination of all of these influences and is one of the best examples of his 'streamline' furniture design aesthetic. Add to all of that the 1939 World's Fair connection and you have an extremely rare collector's piece that spans an almost infinite number of genres! Automotive designs by Sakhnoffsky: 1929 Cord l-29 Special Coupe 1934 Packard Twelve Model 1106 Sport Coupe & Runabout Speedster 1947 White Labatt Streamliner Delivery Truck 1938-41 American Austin Bantam Commander Gatti's 1937 International Harvester...

Pair Streamline Modern Chests by Leo Jiranek
By Leo Jiranek, Donald Deskey
Located in Hanover, MA
Pair of 1938 vintage American Modern streamline art deco chests of drawers designed by Leo Jiranek and possibly manufactured by J.B. Van Sciver Co. of Camden, NJ. Unsigned. The design is bookended as each chest has a corresponding rounded vertical corner with waterfall edge, four drawers with chrome backplates and elongated lacquered horizontal pulls aligned to convey the Art Deco dynamics of speed and forward motion. So strong is the design that it is not necessary to place them side by side. They speak to one another from across a room and would make great bedside chests as well. The tops, horizontal pulls and base are lacquered black and have been freshly restored. The primavera wood cases and drawer faces have a highly polished and figural grained veneer. Drawers are clean and open and close as they ought. This specific design is often attributed to Donald Deskey which is understandable since Jiranek and Deskey were close associates and together in 1934 they formed AMODEC, Inc. for the manufacture and promotion of their own modern furniture designs. LEO A. JIRANEK (b. 1900 d. 1990) was known as the ''Dean of Furniture Designers," one of the Industry's first, and unrepentant freelancers, who enjoyed 67 years in the business. He studied engineering at Princeton University where he graduated in 1922. Throughout his career, Jiranek contributed to more furniture companies than any other known designer, among them Magnavox, Thomasville, Ethan Allen, Kroehler, Heywood Wakefield, The Lane Co...
