About the Item
Late 19th Century American Bird's-Eye Maple Chiffonier/Chest of Drawers, attributed to R.J. Horner & Co., New York. This elegant tall chest features five graduated drawers adorned with turned bamboo-style pulls and rests on original brass casters for ease of movement. The upper section is surmounted by a rectangular mirror framed in faux bamboo and flanked by decorative turned spindle galleries, giving the piece both height and lightness. The warm honey tone of the finely figured birds-eye maple veneer enhances the natural depth and shimmer of the wood grain, a hallmark of quality cabinetry from this period. This type of chest of drawers are also sometimes called “Wellington Chests” and have a unique side-locking mechanism that secures the drawer contents. Skeleton key is included.
