Chinese Lacquered Book Cabinet, c. 1900
About the Item
With an open shelf above and a closed compartment below, this early 20th century book cabinet is the perfect mix of storage and display. Crafted of elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the cabinet has a square-corner design with a short stature and simple silhouette. The exterior is cloaked in red-brown lacquer, now gently faded from years of use and finished with a protective clear coat. This warm, burgundy color is contrasted by a black lacquer top and the soft metallic sheen of its full moon brass lock plate. Today, we love it as an unexpected bar cabinet stocked with bottles, glassware and kitchen supplies.
Brass hardware is replacement.

Located in Chicago, IL
This lacquered display cabinet from Shanxi province was crafted in the mid-19th century using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery methods. The enclosed lower half was used for general storage and the open upper shelf was used to display precious objects such as vases, curios, or piles of books.
The exterior is darkened by a black lacquer finish and hand-painted with charming decorative motifs, including bronze censers, flower vases, scrolls, and scholars' objects. Original brass hardware secures the doors, now richly aged with a smooth patina and subtle oxidation. Unusual for its smaller scale, we love this painted cabinet in a children's bedroom or playroom as an unexpected bookcase or toy chest...

A unique bar for a standout look. This rare piece was designed by Jean-Claude Mahey in the 1970s for Maison Romeo Paris, and displays all the trademark glam of the French seventies period. Brass and black lacquer are used in large, chunky blocks for a powerful impact, with nice curves on each side. From a distance, the piece seems to sparkle.
