About the Item

Titled "Emergency Best Friend", this unique cocktail plinth in vermilion lacquered wood, stainless steel, cast aluminum and glass is by London-based artist and designer EJR Barnes. The edition shown here is the first of a limited series, and the first bar cabinet produced by the designer. Standing at just under 40” high, with the casepiece itself measuring 8” wide by 8” deep by 31.5" high, the cabinet is mounted on a sturdy square base of stainless steel and is topped by a circular stainless steel detachable tray that boasts a built-in glass vase (which is removable for cleaning) to hold flowers; or a bottle of Champagne. The exterior is lacquered in multiple coatings of bright vermillion with white pinstripe trim, creating a dramatic and high-tolerance finish. The cabinet features a subtle but striking detail - a wavy, serpentine form (complete with eyes and an open mouth) serving as the door pull. This element was created using the "lost wax" casting method, in which the artist hand-carved the form in wax, cast it in aluminum, then hand-polished it to achieve the final look. The case opens to reveal two glass shelves, enclosed in a triple-mirrored display, a perfect location to showcase fine glassware or crystal. Each shelf measures 13.5" high with a depth of 6.5". The shiny geometry of the steel contrasts with the warmth of the lacquered wood, creating a harmonious juxtaposition through a shared streamlined Deco/Moderne-inspired aesthetic. The result is a functional and visually captivating object that would be a conversation starter in any sophisticated living environment. About the Artist: Elliot ‘EJR’ Barnes (b. 1991) is an artist and designer based in East London. Known for romantic yet pragmatic works, his auto-didactic practice is elegantly non-conformist, unbound by the emotional barriers of a formal training and somewhat undefined, existing in the gray area between decorative art and industrial design.
