About the Item
Ledge dry bar is a floating wall-mounted sculptural dry bar. Made of carved solid ash, it’s surface recalls the textures of crumbling cliffs around the studio. It’s interior has two solid wood surfaces for a collection of bottles and an adjustable smoked glass shelf for glassware. The back of the interior is covered in a matte black leather. Definitely the most ambitious piece in the Ledge Collection.
The Shale Collection's name was inspired by the cliffs outside Simon Johns' studio, in the Missisquoi Valley in Quebec. Shale is a type of rock formation that tends to split and erode in layers, leaving behind a layered and random composition of textures. The mapping of the composition of this cliff was sketched on to the pieces of the collection, and carved out in layers, with a router and a chisel.

Simon Johns
Simon Johns is a Canadian fine arts-trained designer working out of the woods in southern Quebec. He approaches design with hands-on studio experiments closer to sculpture than to design. His work draws from relations between the manufactured product and the raw surroundings of the studio's wooded location. His work has been shown at Sight Unseen Offsite for NY Design Week in 2016 and 2017, at Wanted Design Manhattan 2016 and 2017, and at the Toronto Design Offsite (TODO) 2017 and 2018.

Ledge is a floating console, mounted to the wall, in solid ash with a black glass top. It stems from material exploration inspired by the cliffs around Johns’ studio, making solid ash reference crumbling stone through a unique technique. The wood components are scored across the grain, then carved by breaking the woods grain, to create patterns of variable depths, according to Johns’ sketch of the rock formations outside. The facade of this piece wraps around to the sides, and the center opens up as two doors, to reveal a functional cabinet. The opaque black glass top nods to the mirror effects of water and contrasts with the minerality of the rest. Due to the hand carved facade, no two pieces are quite the same. Measure: 96".
