Vittorio Valabrega, Mobile bar, prod. Valabrega 1940s

About the Item

Beautiful 1940s bar cabinet designed by Vittorio Valabrega and produced by the Turin-based company of the same name, Valabrega. Ditta Fratelli Valabrega was founded in Turin in 1884, where it distinguished and established itself by producing eclectic and Art Nouveau furniture. Beginning in the 1990s, owner became Vittorio Valabrega (1861- 1952) who opened the new headquarters at 13 Principe Amedeo Street; attached to the exhibition is the factory where about 50 workers including carpenters, sculptors, upholsterers and painters work. Vittorio Valabrega participated in the following exhibitions: Turin 1898 Silver Medal Paris 1900 World's Fair Gold Medal Milan 1906 Grand Jury Prize Turin 1911 Out of Competition Gold Medal After World War I the industry continued to develop (it would come to have 100 employees) the factory was moved to Corso Massimo d'Azeglio 21 and the showroom store to Via Maria Vittoria 46 . From 1925 Vittorio Valabrega was joined in the company's management by his son Ernesto (1901-1944), who imposed a radical renewal as early as 1928, creating a series of solid walnut furniture with beautiful polished surfaces, aniline stained in discreet shades of green, red and blue. In 1932, both the production and sale of antique and modern furniture were combined on Corso Massimo d'Azeglio. Racial laws strongly affected the fate of the firm, first the name was changed to Mobilart and later in 1944 Ernesto Valabrega was deported to a death camp in Poland from where he would never return. In 1948 the elder Vittorio decided to discontinue production, and the firm's management passed into the hands of his daughter-in-law Lilla Momigliano Valabrega (1908-1968), who would move the showroom to 14 Arsenale Street, where she would deal with furniture and antiques. In 1985 a private American foundation based in Miami will purchase several pieces of floral-style furniture, including the famous mantelpiece that won the gold medal in Paris in 1900, for display in the Museum of Italian Floral Art in Miami Florida U.S.A. In 1953 Lilla was joined by her son Vittorio, who would participate from the 1950s onward in numerous antique shows. In 1967 Vittorio moved the firm to 29 Via della Rocca, a splendid "Hotel Particulier " perfect for displaying fine period and 18th-century furniture, majolica and porcelain bronzes chandeliers and sculptures.
