AN EXCEPTIONAL AUSTRIAN NEO-MEDIEVAL SYCAMORE CUPBOARD FINELY CARVED WITH BIRDS AMONG FRUITING VINES, PANELS OF GOTHIC TRACERY, DRAGONS, A STAG AND AN IBEX, WITH WROUGHT STEEL LOCK-PLATES AND HANDLES, BRANDED M BENEATH A COUNT’S CORONET, CIRCA 1890.

Schloss Anif, outside Salzburg, was formerly a seat of the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg and was bought in 1837 by Alois, Count Arco Stepperg (1808-1891) who remodelled the Schloss in the Medieval revival style. The furniture was supplied by the Salzburg cabinet-maker Joseph Wessicken (1810-1899). Count Stepperg’s daughter married Ernst, Count Moÿ de Sons and they inherited Schloss Anif.
The inspiration for this cupboard appears to have been the late 15th century Alpine cupboard...
