About the Item

Biedermeier cylinder Secretary so called Seeländer Northern Germany / Denmark Mahogany Biedermeier around 1820 Dimensions: H x W x D: 226 cm x 121 cm x 59 cm Description: Three-piece secretary in mahogany veneered on oak standing on pointed legs with wonderful inlays, so-called marquetry. In the lower part we find three large drawers. Above it, behind a cylinder lock, we find the secretary compartment with a sloping leather-covered writing surface, with a drawer to the left and right of each. Above it we see a 12-piece interior, veneered in birch, mahogany and maple. The interior is strictly based on the prevailing architecture of the time. Thus, the central door is presented as a double-leaf portal with staircase and flanking ebonized solid columns. The upper end of the portal is formed by a so called schinkelroof. To the left and right of the portal, each in a semi-circular arch segment, we can find marketed and ink-painted figures in the ancient Greek manner. In the outer part of the interior we find three drawers arranged one above the other and one false drawer each. The geometrically veneered fronts are decorated with thread inlays and have handles made of bone. If you close the cylinder lock and open the central flap of the top, the piece of furniture can be used as a standing desk. The fine marquetry continues in the interior of the standing desk. Behind the center door, which opens via a secret mechanism, there are three more small drawers. Letter compartments and a writing surface covered with leather give the compartment an additional practical use. To the left and right of the compartment we see large convex curved doors. Behind each is another drawer and two larger compartments. Behind the upper door there is a hanging device for pens and other utensils. An openwork gallery and an ornate staircase form the upper finish of the furniture. Condition: Excellent restored condition, shellac hand polish. All drawers run smoothly. All locks and mechanisms work, keys are present. Fun Facts: The "Seeländer" type of furniture can be found in the far north of Germany and in Denmark during the Biedermeier period. It came in different versions - as a simple cylinder secretaire and as a cylinder secretaire with an attachment. Not all top secretaries have a second secretary compartment that can be used as a standing desk, there are also simpler versions with a simple central door. Seeländer secretaries usually have oak as a support material and are veneered with precious woods such as mahogany, ash, elm or birch. The interiors of those pieces of furniture often stand out in color from the rest of the furniture and are sometimes decorated with ornate marquetry.
