19th Century Very Small Secretary in Louis XVI Style with Marquetry, France 1890

About the Item

Very small secretary in Louis XVI style with fine marquetry France rosewood, mahogany and others Louis XVI style, circa 1890 Dimensions: H x W x D: 141 x 71 x 37 cm Description: Straight-lined secretaire in rosewood veneer with a strict geometric structure through inlaid lines of light-dark contrasting woods. The square feet taper conically downwards and end in brass sabots. In the lower part of the secretary there are two doors, inside there are two open compartments. Above them is the writing flap which opens to the front and is decorated with elaborate marquetry. We see circumferential cranked lines and a central medallion with a domestic scene. Depicted are mother and daughter studying at home. They seem to come from a good family, because they have high-quality furniture and expensive clothes. The marquetry work consists of different, partly colored precious woods. If we open the writing flap, we see an interior with four drawers and four open compartments. A surface of leather serves as a writing surface. Above the writing compartment is another drawer. The upper end is formed by a top made of white marble. The sides of the secretary are also beautifully veneered with geometric marquetry. Condition: Restored, very good condition. Shellac hand polish. The original leather is brittle but still good to use, it was treated with special leather care. The marble top has an old, expertly repaired break.
