About

Biedermeier secretary with secret compartments Germany (Saxony) birch, mahogany and others Biedermeier, circa 1830 Dimensions: H x W x D: 172 x 105 x 52 (92) cm Description: Writing cabinet standing on massive feet following the shape of the corpus. Three large drawers in the lower section, the lowest one slightly protruding, typical for the region. Above them is the folding writing tablet and a very impressive interior. This consists of a central open compartment surrounded by six drawers of different sizes. In addition, there are two pull-out drawers with compartments for letters, papers, etc. The interior impresses with its beautiful architecture based marquetry. Thus we find a so-called masonry marquetry on the lower wide drawer, above it small inlaid pilasters, which lead over to round arch segments. At the top center we see an ornamental inlay work in mahogany on a maple ground. Behind the drawers are some secret compartments. Above the interior there is another obvious drawer, and two more hidden in the cornice. The key plates and handles are ebonized, the light colored wood on the outside is a nice contrast to the dark interior. Condition: Restored, ready to daily use. Perfect in function. Comparable objects can be found in the reference book: Rainer Haaff - Biedermeier Welten p. 126 Useful informations about Biedermeier epoche: The Biedermeier era developed almost at the same time as the Empire and so we find numerous parallels in the design language. Both epochs were characterized by a strictly classicistic and straightforward basic form. Precious woods such as cherry or mahogany, which was very expensive at the time, were popular in both epochs. Walnut, ash, birch and all kinds of fruit woods were also popular. In Biedermeier furniture construction, attention is paid to straight lines and a strictly cubist design. Decorative elements are largely dispensed with, even the geometric fields of the previous Louis XVI era give way in favor of flatness. Carefully selected and mirrored veneers now ensure the design of the surface. Sparsely attached pillars and recessed key plates made of ebony loosen up the flatness. The formal language of the Biedermeier period spread throughout Central Europe from circa 1800. We find Biedermeier furniture in regionally different variations in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Hungary, as well as in the Scandinavian region. We call the transition phase to historicism, beginning from the 1840s, the late Biedermeier or Louis-Philippe epoche. In the middle of the 19th century, the strict cubist lines of the Biedermeier were supplemented by more playful shapes and ultimately replaced entirely.
