19th C. Drop Front Desk, Secretary Abattant, with Multiple Wood Marquetry Inlay

About the Item

This handsome Carlos IV style "secretaire-abattant" or drop front desk combines functionality with ample storage space. Top, front and sides feature detailed marquetry inlay in geometric and floral motifs, executed with a variety of richly contrasting types of wood. With wide locking drawers above and below, the center fall front secretary panel opens to reveal interior shelving, six small drawers with inlay fronts, and a generous blue leather writing surface. The furniture is in good condition, showing some small defects. The lower section drawers appear to have had pulls at one time, now removed. The brass knobs on the small interior drawers are probably not original. All locks are original and function well, keys are included. These desks have ample storage area, and can be easily converted into a stunning dry bar or liquor cabinet. Having descended from the French Bourbon Kings, the Carlos IV style reflects the strong French influence on Spanish arts, crafts and design popularized during his reign (1788-1808). The furniture SHIPS FROM WITHIN THE UNITED STATES, so no extra duties or export / import paperwork will be required.
