About the Item

Biedermeier secretary Palatinate (?) Burl wood Biedermeier around 1840 Dimensions: H x W x D: 159 x 104 x 54 cm Description: Secretary from the Biedermeier period with quite extraordinary wild grained veneer pattern. The piece of furniture from the late Biedermeier period has three drawers in the lower part, the writing flap above and another slightly bulging drawer on the top, below the slightly protruding head. The spectacular interior has a portal-like enclosed open compartment in the center. The staircase, round arches, triangular pediment, half columns and parquet floor of the compartment give the piece of furniture an architectural appearance. This impression is reinforced by the mirror attached to the back, which visually extends the parquet floor. By means of a secret mechanism, the staircase can be unlocked and used as a drawer. Below the drawer we find two more hidden drawers. Four drawers, also hidden, are located behind the smaller open compartments. The ebonized writing surface and the handles and columns, which are also blackened, contrast nicely with the wood. The head of the piece of furniture is locked with wedges and can be removed for transport purposes. The rounded pilasters, the shape of the feet and the bulging head drawer make me lean towards the regionalization of the piece of furniture to the Palatinate. Also, furniture in the area was designed with vivid veneer patterns, but mostly walnut veneer was used. Condition: Restored to a residential condition and shellac polished. All drawers run smoothly, locks work.
