Important William IV Rosewood & Mother of Pearl Inlaid Lady's Table Compendium
Fine and very rare William IV rosewood and mother of pearl inlaid antique lady's compendium. Created like a Greek temple, a rectangular structure with four columns on each corner carrying the domed top finalizing in a large square mother of pearl top, two large opening front doors hiding the principal part, all raised on a bottom structure. The outside front is covered in mother of pearl inlay with beautifully elaborated ornaments. The hinged domed top, which can be locked, opens upwards, to reveal small compartments within the main body and a lid lined with gold embossed leather and silk. There is a catch and a silk pull to open the lid to display a folder to hold documents or maybe love letters. A mirror with a black frame is placed in the back of the compartment. The top drawer contains a plentitude of little sections, which are framed with silver metal edges. There a sections holding finely carved mother of pearl thread spools, sections for needles and pins, embossed leather covered sections with tiny detailed brass handles and sections with bows of silk, which open into little books of felt when they slide out and several other interestingly shaped compartments. The middle part of the compendium is enclosed behind panelled inlaid doors, which are covered on the inside with gold embossed leather. There are six drawers with mother-of-pearl pulls and ornamental inlays. Each drawer is lined with silk and has differently shaped compartments to hold jewelry and other precious valuables within these padded sections. The bottom part of the compendium contains one large drawer which can be closed with a key. The keys for both locks are included. It seems like at one point in time both locks have been exchanged, they don't seem to be the original locks. Provenance: This rare and important piece is from the collection of the actress Ann Turkel. It has been in her family since the 19th century. A letter of provenance written and personalized to the new owner will be provided by Ms Turkel. Condition: As mentioned in the description, the two locks have been exchanged at point in time. Both locks close perfectly and the keys are present. There are some minor losses, clearly seen in the photographs. On the right side of the lower lock a tiny piece of mother-of-pearl, on the front left side a small piece of molding around the top 'roof', the same on the right backside corner two smaller pieces of molding in the same place. There is a small piece of veneer on the lower left side missing. There are light cracks in the rosewood veneer on the front doors and the rosewood veneer on the back wall has a light ripple. These are minor imperfections, who don't influence the beautiful appearance of this extraordinary piece of artwork. Reflecting the importance of this rare compendium, it's general condition and the well preserved detailed artwork, we consider this piece as very good to excellent.
