About the Item

Set of 7 wall shelves and one vase in Nero Marquina marble Yama Tana have numerous meanings: by their origins and their forms, these marble creations are the paths leading to some upside-down Japanese landscapes. Thanks to the vision of a gallery, the talent of a designer and the know-how of a marble maker, this set composed of shelves and vases came to the surface: they are the meeting points of creative and poetic dialogues between José Lévy and WA Design Gallery. These blocks are tales of stone and light. Mixing art, craft and design, the Yama Tana rase from a shared loves of Japan, materials and well-manufacturing. These memories of mountainous, uncertain, rough and deep landscapes are totally sensitive. So, the choice of marble was clear. Who better than a marble worker from Carrara to shape one of the most beautiful black marbles in the world, the Nero Marquina. Thus were born these stone landscapes on which light plays. In Japanese, Yama means “mountain” and Tana, “shelf”. Two concepts to create a unique work, Yama Tana, the “mountain shelves”. Their two-faced side is ever-present, semantically and artistically : they are the archaeological witnesses of a dreamy Japan, the remains of a Japanese Pompeii. The Yama Tana deny any destination - or accept several. They can be used as shelves but can also live as sculptures. They do not respect boundaries between art and design. They are the perfect examples of this Japanese philosophy in which a tea bowl and a brush stroke are equal. A dichotomy is also visible in the materials and its treatment: a polished, smooth and slightly shiny flat part allows to receive - or not - any kind of objects; an opposite part is rough and charcoal, contrasting very strongly with the top. These uneven areas are real mountain extracts, tributes to nature. Like the sun brings life to a view, the light plays with this stone, its edges, its excavations, its veins. The sensual sensitivity of these platforms dedicated to walls are similar to mountain paths, fossilized lava rivers. Two vases complete the set (one sold with the shelves, one apart): they are the witnesses of a mountain collapse, totemic stones found in nature, sometimes placed in a hole planed for this purpose, sometimes left at the foot of a harmoniously desolate composition. The Yama Tana are as much meetings as dialogues. They are similar to sinuous lines of mountain landscapes that can be observed by far. These horizons, like clouds, are countlessly full of interpretations. From the shelves, upside-down mountains, to the vases, volcanic rocks, it is indeed the perpetual dialogue between art and design, beauty and functionality, nature and culture, which is at stake: the Yama Tana are propositions, not answers, a unique work with a powerful design for multiple aims.
