About the Item

An iconic example of Italian post-war design, the ‘Joy’ rotating shelving unit by Achille Castiglioni for Zanotta is both functional and innovative. This 7 tier version in a black scratch-resistant embossed finish is a rare piece. The unit is composed of seven shelves in MDF with internal steel reinforcement, all anchored to a central vertical steel spine with articulated joints. What makes Joy exceptional is its unique ability to rotate each shelf individually, allowing you to reconfigure the shelves depending on your desired look. Whether used to display books, objects, or as a functional room divider. About the Designer: Achille Castiglioni (1918–2002) was one of the most revered figures in Italian design, known for his humor, precision, and radical rethinking of everyday objects. A co-founder of the Italian design movement, he created timeless, award-winning pieces that marry technical innovation with playful functionality. The Joy shelving unit, created in 1989, reflects his ethos perfectly — a seemingly simple concept executed with profound technical and aesthetic elegance. About Zanotta: Founded in 1954, Zanotta is one of Italy’s most influential design manufacturers, known for its avant-garde collaborations and commitment to radical design. With a catalogue that includes icons by Castiglioni, Magistretti, and Gatti-Paolini-Teodoro, Zanotta’s pieces are celebrated worldwide for pushing boundaries between art, architecture, and utility.
