About the Item
A Pierre Vandel two section black lacquered aluminium étagères with brass detailing and blacked glass shelves. Labelled - Pierre Vandel Paris - Circa late 1970s.
Furniture designer Pierre Vandel was born in 1946 in Roubaix, on the outskirts of Lille in France. He is best known for his angular designs, which exude the glamorous yet minimalist aesthetic that heavily dominated French furniture and lighting design in the 1970s.
His friendship with the iconic fashion designer Pierre Cardin proved to be a real turning point in Vandel’s design career, launching him into international success. Cardin supported Vandel’s efforts by encouraging him to create his own brand, Pierre Vandel – Paris, and then spread the word to the rich and famous, who purchased Vandel’s designs.
Overall the étagères are in very good condition for their age, showing some light signs of use. There are a few marks to the lacquered black finish in places, and there has been a small touch up to the front top edge on the larger shelving, please refer to photograph number 16.
The glass shelves show minor top surface marks. They have the original black finish to the undersides which has worn off in a few places, and they is some fading to one of the shelves (Photograph number 11), There is a small chip to the corner of one of the shelves. Please refer to photograph number 17, showing in situ.
The cleanly defined lines of this shelving would be perfect for displaying studio pottery or art glass, etc.
The shelves are 28cm deep. There is 36cm in height inbetween shelves. The two units are 80.5cm wide each. The smaller unit is 78cm high.
