Post - Modern "John IId" Shelving Unit by Philippe Starck for Disform, 1980

About the Item

The "John IId" shelving unit was designed by Philippe Starck for Disform in 1890 . It’s a modular design. Consists of 2 black coated tubular metal rods which supports 5 wooden shelves through an ingenious system. Beech wood. t is easier to find them all in black. As we previously highlighted, he is a multidisciplinary artist. So, he does not excel only in one subject, but he is someone very versatile and creative, a brilliant mind. He dedicates himself to the design of everyday products such as furniture and lemon squeezers to revolutionary mega-yachts, intensely vibrant, exhilarating and spooky hotels and the miraculous technologies of individual wind turbines and electricity. As if this were not enough, his creative desires have also led him to car design. Therefore, we are talking about a true visionary who puts the art of innovation at the service of a design and a democratic ecology, driven by action and respectful of human heritage and nature, be it with the Elise recycling bin or the Zartan, the first fully recycled rotomolded chair. We could also highlight among his most relevant works the design of affordable and adjustable PATH houses. A high-tech prefab housing project, they recently attested to the durability of an approach he began in 1994 with the prefab house for sale in the 3 Suisses catalogue. Starck studied at the Nissim de Camondo school in Italy. In 1968 he founded his first company, which produced inflatable objects. In 1969 he became Cardin's artistic director.1 In 1974 he settled in the United States and two years later he returned to Paris, where he screened his first nightclub, La Main Bleu, and the nightclub Les Bains-Douches. In 1979 he founded the company Starck Product.1 During the 1980s he renovated French President François Mitterrand's private apartments at the Palais de l'Elysée, decorated the interiors of Café Costes in Paris, and was in charge of the interiors of Caffé Manin in Tokyo. He was also responsible for decorating the interiors of the Royalton Hotel in New York 2 and designed the plans for the premises of the French cutlery Laguiole. At the end of the 1980s, he built the ship La Fiamma for the Asahi company and the Nani Nani building for Rikugo in Tokyo.3 He also took care of the interior design of the Teatriz4 and Ramses in Madrid and was responsible for the interior decoration of the Paramount Hotel. 5 In 1991 he participated in the construction of the Groningen Museum,6 built the Le Baron Vert office building in Osaka7 for Meisei and took care of a series of private residences, such as Lemoult (Paris), L'Angle (Antwerp), 18 maisons of rapport in Los Angeles and a private residence in Madrid. In the late 1990s, he created the Good Goods catalog with La Redoute. 8 In 2018, he inaugurated two buildings in Quito, Ecuador, one within the urban area of the city and another in the Cumbayá parish; For Starck, the buildings propose community life: "We live in a society in which we are increasingly alone, envying our neighbors. Here it is the opposite, I use a concept of modern surrealism that offers surprises in everything you see," he said. during the inauguration of both projects. The projects were promoted by Uribe & Schwarzkopf, a real estate developer led by Tommy Schwarzkopf, who has been in charge of leading the urban renewal of the city.
