Postmodern Mackenzie Childs Vintage Ceramic Modular Shelves Majolica 1983 Design

About the Item

Extremely rare set of long-retired Mackenzie Childs Modular Majolica Shelf Supports. Modular, mix and match, can be stacked and configured in multiple ways. There is very little information out there about this Mackenzie Childs design. My research tells me that these were sporadically available, a la carte and customized, through Neiman Marcus from the 1983 - 1993 for $700 to 1000+ per ceramic piece. Based on the MC mark on the bottom, this dates to the first year of production. Mackenzie Childs was also founded in 1983. The combination of ten ceramic shelf supports available here, as listed below, would have retailed for approximately $8800 in 1983 (equivalent to $23,800 today). 2 twisted columns w/ bases 2 twisted columns w/ capitals 2 twisted column shafts 1 large round globe with base 1 round finial with poka dots 2 large aegean columns, en pointe (23" h) Patrons had the choice of using each piece with their own choice of shelving or to order, again, a la carte, customized wood shelves from MC. The choices were black lacquer, white lacquer and marbleized lacquer, 5' length and 8 to 10" deep. I've included photos of what the marbleized shelving looked like and how the set was advertised in various MC promotional material at the time (mainly postcards). My apologies for the poor photo quality of these images. All 10 ceramic pieces are sold as a set here. The wood planks in the photos are used for display purposes only and are not included. We'd be more than happy to work with the new owner to design the configuration and shelf type that works for them. The dimensions below are of one of the twisted columns w/ bases.

Wear consistent with age and use. Good vintage condition. No breaks or cracks. Hand-painted, so there are imperfections in the pattern. Glaze and color vibrant. Gorgeous set.
