About the Item

This is a superb antique Regency flame mahogany and satinwood Sheraton style inlaid sideboard, circa 1820 in date. The shaped rectangular body features inlaid marquetry shells, classical urns and bellflower on geometric decoration. The stageback is enclosed by a pair of inlaid satinwood secret sliding doors set either side of a central panel suoerbly inlaid with a conch shell. There is a small central drawer in the frieze flanked by two frieze drawers and two bow corner cellarette drawers on either end. It is raised on elegant square tapering legs and is complete with the original working locks and keys. Dimensions in cm: Height 116 x width 217 x depth 73 Dimensions in inches: Height 3 feet, 10 inches x width 7 feet, 1 inch x depth 2 feet, 5 inches Flame mahogany Thomas Sheraton, 18th century Furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "Flame Mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Regency Furniture During the Regency period it was fashionable to copy the classical furniture of the Roman and Greek times. Furniture had stopped evolving in design and had moved back to classical forms. The Pioneer designers who represented this period were: Thomas Hope (1770-1831), George Smith (1804-1828), Henry Holland (1745-1806) George IV had a major influence over the furniture makers of the time. This period saw the introduction of brass to wood from the previous marquetry that had been originally used. The sofa table was also introduced. The main features of the Regency period furniture were their simplicity, with straight, unbroken surfaces and lines. Satinwood is a hard and durable wood with a satinlike sheen, much used in cabinetmaking, especially in marquetry. It comes from two tropical trees of the family Rutaceae (rue family). East Indian or Ceylon satinwood is the yellowish or dark-brown heartwood of Chloroxylon swietenia. The lustrous, Fine-grained, usually figured wood is used for furniture, cabinetwork, veneers and backs of brushes. West Indian satinwood, sometimes called yellow wood, is considered superior. It is the golden yellow, lustrous, even-grained wood found in the Florida Keys and the West Indies. It has long been valued for furniture. It is also used for musical instruments, veneers, and other purposes. Satinwood is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Sapindales, family Rutaceae.
