About the Item

In an unusual pentagon shape, this fine Victorian example of the Aesthetic Movement is constructed of burled walnut and ebonized wood. Features include a raised beveled mirrored back, turned gallery balusters with finials on top, shelves, a center drawer, and a hand painted and gilded insert with song birds flying among flowering branches on the cabinet door. Scored inset burled walnut panels throughout. All-original fanciful brass hardware. Attributed to Henry William Batley (1846 - 1932), it was probably made by Gillow & Co., an English furniture making firm based in Lancaster, Lancashire, and in London. An interesting figure in England’s nineteenth century Aesthetic Movement, Henry W. Batley was not only an original etcher and engraver but a designer of Aesthetic furniture, wallpapers and textiles.

Antique Sideboard, Edwardian Mirror Back, circa 1910

This is an antique, Edwardian mirror back sideboard dating to the early 20th century, circa 1910. Adorned with finals and classical motif in the boxwood inlay featuring urns, garlands and swags lend this piece the Greco overtones favored at the turn of the century. Raised on turned front legs united with the side stiles by the lower tier, the cabinet offers a central cupboard with field panel doors inlaid with urn motif. Flanking the cupboard, concave shelving beneath a frieze decorated with inlaid swags around a central drawer dressed with brass pulls.
