American Federal Inlaid Mahogany Bowfront Sideboard, New York circa 1815

About the Item

Large and of a particularly striking form, this bold and uncommon sideboard is noteworthy for it's bowed curvature and unusual height. Three smaller graduated drawers flank a single broad drawer over a pair of doors, these opening to reveal a large storage space. Plum-pudding mahogany veneers are brilliantly selected for each drawer, framed in satinwood inlay and matched for flow and symmetry. The chaotic flame of the veneers along the broad drawer is distinct against the vertical fountain form of the grains in the doors and flanking drawers - finishing this in each drawer is a silver-plated ovular backplate and pull. The drawers are precisely joined with fine dovetailing, the bottom board set in rabbets, lined with blocking along the edges and tacked along the back edge with cut iron nails. The curved drawer facades are constructed with laminated pine cores beneath the mahogany veneers. The small top drawers on either side used to have wooden latches beneath the drawer, allowing these to be locked without the drawer beneath being opened and the latch depressed - this alleviated the need for locks in these upper drawers. The bow of the sideboard is accentuated by the full curvature in the apron of the case, this with match-booked veneers and triangular satinwood inlays that leave the form looking light and airy despite it's significant proportions. Four bookend inlays cap the leg columns, these closely related with New York furniture, also found on sideboards labeled by Elbert Anderson of New York City - a sideboard of related inlay, leg and stringer inlay form is documented in American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection, Vol. II p. 546 with only short bookend inlay panels above the four legs. Due to the heavy construction of the piece, the sideboard rests over tapered legs with arched inlays (on the front legs). The structure is untouched for the most part other than basic and minor repairs over the years, added pegs or nails here and there for strength - most glue blocks, including those behind the arched apron and lining each drawer, remain untouched and original. For best presentation, we would recommend that the sideboard be restored and polished, but it is certainly very enjoyable in it's current estate-found condition. For the collector passionate about the New York work center, this will certainly be a statement piece that defines a classical dining room. Materials: Yellow Pine [backboards, some internal structure], White Pine [laminated drawer core, internal structure], Poplar [drawer frame and bottoms], Hardwood - probably Hickory [internal structure], Mahogany [veneers and solid primary surfaces] Measurements: 56 1/4" W x 29 1/4" D x 42 1/2" H Condition Report: Top of sideboard is heavily worn with gouges, abrasions, cracking to veneers and stringer inlay loss around edges - front corners have cracking, the left corner with some more notable blemish. Restored at one point with patches to veneers, repairs to cracks on either side of the case, some added slivers to back of the case to fill gaps from shrinkage and some replaced pins - wooden pegs also appear to be added for strength in the right and left columns. Original hardware throughout (hinges, oval pulls, etc.). Top drawers on either side with evidence of having wooden spring latches at one point, these now absent. Other wear, scratches, blemishes, etc. as is apparent in the large collection of images on our primary website.
