Biosca Sideboard in Stained Pine, Spain 1960s

About the Item

Biosca sideboard in stained pine. This sideboard from the hand of the Spanish manufacturer Biosca is an absolute paragon of the brutalism style applied in furniture. Not much is known about this illustrious manufacturer and the available examples are rare and for good reason. They are very robustly crafted and they have more than stood the test of time and are actually only getting more beautiful. The proportions and techniques that have been used are things that we would like to categorize as sublime. Pure craftsmanship combined with a refined sense of detail and quality is what the makers have shown here. The corpus is connected at all corners by means of a brilliant tooth joint. Besides, this section rests on two sturdy and wide legs that both feature a striking cutout.Four relatively heavy doors are decorated with special geometric woodcuts that collectively form a beautiful pattern and add depth and dynamism. Small shadows alternate and give the object an air of mystery as it flirts with patterns similar to those found on 17th century Spanish doors. Behind the doors, we find a spacious storage area with drawers on either side.      The pine wood has acquired a beautiful patina over the years and also gives a slight reflection in the light. The patina we see diffusely reflected all over the exterior and definitely contributes to the distinctly Spanish character that this sideboard exudes in all facets. The condition of this very special Biosca sideboard is completely consistent to age and use. Minor damages such as scratches and discoloration are part of it.

  • Biosca Dining Table With Geometric Patterns In Pine, Spain 1960s
    By BIOSCA
    Located in Hellouw, NL
Biosca dining table with geometric patterns in pine. The Biosca furniture, as we have already indicated, is shrouded in a haze of mystery. Where exactly does it come from, who made it and above all who is the inventor of these striking but very welcome altering appearances within the mid century design world? Questions to which no one really posesses the answer to.This table is also completely in the recognizable but special "Biosca" style. Two prominent legs are made of solid pine and are decorated on both sides with a geometric carving. This could be a reference to the strong Moorish influences in the south of the Iberian Peninsula where even more complex mosaics adorned the buildings.Incidentally, we see similar decorations in Spanish furniture and for instance doors from the seventeenth century. The wrought iron bars that reinforce the table in a crosswise manner can also be seen in tables from the above period. These are also attached to the outside of the legs with a beautiful rosette. This table initially communicates a robustness through the somewhat rough table...
