Collinson and Lock attributed. A rare Anglo-Japanese inverted mahogany sideboard

About the Item

An Anglo-Japanese inverted mahogany sideboard, the arched open cornice with a small central carved display bracket to the centre, and an upper display shelf, a dentil cornice below with Japanese shelves to the centre above two small drawers, flanked by a pair of astragal glazed doors with adjustable shelves inside and Japanese design fretwork to the side panels. The base section with upper bulbous fluted moulded detail all around, with four doors below, the central pair inset and  inlaid with stylized floral garlands, urns and ribbons, flanked by two further doors inlaid with ribbons, pipes and garlands, over a central open display with turned uprights and floral fretwork arched details, flanked by two drawers to each side, with a further full width open display area to the base with fluted upright supports with arched details to the sides. The whole stood on bracket feet.

    Design firmly attributed to E W Godwin. Made by Collinson & Lock. Stamped with their in house design number to the underside '8142'. An exceptional Anglo Japanese rosewood table, stylistically ahead of its time. The upper and lower edges with tram line details above a pair of opposite Japanese fretwork friezes, on four bowed legs cut from solid rosewood, united by a lower shelf stepped down in the centre, (reminiscent of Godwin's most famous tea table with three hinged side leafs also incorporating a stepped shelf that he designed 1872, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
