Danish Walnut Sideboard with Four Doors and Metal Legs

About the Item

This stunning sideboard is maximally Minimalist, with absolutely no decoration, aside from the beauty of the perfectly matched walnut veneers. Whereas many high-quality Scandinavian pieces of the postwar period featured exotic hardwoods such as teak and rosewood, this large piece uses locally-sourced walnut to very good effect. The grain is interesting, without being overpowering, and polishes to a higher gloss than teak. The sliding doors operate smoothly and the interior contains ample (and adjustable) shelving. The piece is ideal as a sideboard, credenza behind a desk, entry piece of accompaniment to a large wall-mounted television. It has quiet impact in any room; a pure block of nature reformatted to human needs.

  • Tianjin Style Sideboard With Original Patina and Original Hardware
    Located in Chicago, IL
An exceptionally original 19th century household storage coffer in the Tianjin Style. Tianjin is a large city in Northeast China that acts as the port of Beijing. It was a prosperous city and the furniture made there was known for is solidity and clean, balanced lines. Tianjin storage chests typically feature heavy brass handles and lock plates. All hardware on this chest is original and the patina on the wood is aged and lovely; natural oxblood lacquer, which has rubbed off in some areas and darkened in other areas due to more than a century of use. Tianjin chests usually have three large drawers across the top two large doors below. The piece was probably part of a dowry and exhibited in a highly visible part of the home. The whitish deposits on the legs suggest that the piece sat on a terra cotta...
