Albert Guenot, Extra Large Art Deco Black and Burl Wood Sideboard, France 1930s

About the Item

Extra large Art Deco black and burl wood sideboard, France, 1930s. Impressive large sideboard, because of the four black columns he seems to float. The previous owner purchased it out an old architectural Hotel in Belgium. A handsome piece that can handle large spaces. We recent found this Image (picture 2) in a Art Deco Magazine 'Thuis' it is almost the same model with the unusual base with chrome Rim. There are no other similar sideboards to find with this peculiar base with chrome rim, so we can almoust say with certainty that is a design by Guenot. Guenot was a French decorator and furniture designer, born in Arcueil-Cachan, and schooled at the Ecole Boulle in Paris. Guenot immersed himself in “The Moderne Style” by working as a designer in the studio of Maurice Dufrene, in sculpted wood with Laurent Malcles, in sculpture with Paul Follot, in ironwork for Edgar Brandt, and briefly for architect Rene Crevel. From 1923 the balance of his career was at the Pomone design studio of Au Bon Marche department store in Paris. He became the chef d’atelier under director, Paul Follot. In 1932 he succeeeded Rene Prou as director, remaining there until 1955. Guenot designed the interiors of the hotels Chateau Frontenac and George V, Paris, contributed designs to the 1935 oceanliner Normandie, the 1961 oceanliner France, and offices of Maison Militaire de l’Elysee. From 1920 Guenot exhibited at the Salons of Societe des Artistes Decorateurs, and from 1927, Salons d’Automne. He participated at the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, the 1931 Paris Exposition Coloniale, and the 1937 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne, Salons des Arts Menagers, and numerous exhibitions abroad.
