Federal Boston Mahogany Sideboard Attributed to the Seymour Workshop

About the Item

An exceptional Federal Boston demilune Mahogany sideboard, with shaped top with delicate arrow inlay surmounting a conforming case with deep central frieze drawer flanked by smaller fitted felt lined flatware drawers, over a second deep center drawer flanked by bottle drawers, and curved doors on either side, opening to large storage compartments. All the drawers and doors feature flame mahogany veneer fronts and cross-banded veneer borders, satinwood line inlay, and period oval brass pulls & escutcheons, all supported by six nicely carved reeded tapered legs. Attributed to the Boston Seymour workshop, circa late 18th / early 19th century. Very good overall condition, with some veneer shrinkage cracks, restorations, and other minimal imperfections and wear commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 40.5 in H x 70 in W x 26 in D.

    Repaired: restoration on three of the feet. Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Very good overall condition, with some veneer shrinkage cracks filled, and other minimal imperfections and wear commensurate with age and use. Plugged holes in top where splash rail may have been.

    Rare sideboard attributed to Eliel Saarinen (father of Eero Saarinen) designed before his immigration to the United States. In a style that we now refer to as "Art Deco," this style was considered the "National Romantic Style" in Finland essentially a twist on what became known worldwide as Art Deco with its strong vertical lines and medieval references. The workmanship of this cabinet and its materials is magnificent. Note the carefully matched panels of golden masurbjork (birch root), the intricate carvings of medieval knights (very similar to those guarding Saarinen's Helsinki Railway Station built in 1906) and the high contrast of golden and dark birch wood seen again in Saarinen's furniture designed in the United States in the late 1920s.
