Exceptional Portsmouth, NH Sideboard Attributed to Judkins & Senter, circa 1810
Located in Milford, NH
An exceptional Federal sideboard with bow front center section, conforming top surmounting an upper section with a center frieze drawer flanked by two fitted small drawers and two end drawers over two center doors, which open to interior storage, flanked by two bottle drawers with paterae and two doors which open to a single interior shelf on each side. All drawers feature punched floral brasses, and all doors are veneered and cross banded with figured mahogany and birch, accented with checkered string inlay around the case. The sideboard shows six turret top half columns of figured maple, reeded in the center sections, and supported by six turned legs. The sideboard is of Portsmouth, NH origin, attributed to cabinetmakers Jonathan Judkins & William Senter, circa 1810, with a similar example found in the Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth. Very good overall condition, with some surface restorations, shrinkage cracks, repairs, minor losses, and other expected wear from age and use. A beautiful example of a federal period sideboard...
