Waring & Gillow
Historic furniture manufacturing company Waring & Gillow Ltd. was at the forefront of luxury English furnishings for the better part of a century. Having furnished era-defining ocean liners — including the RMS Lusitania and HMS Queen Mary — the company’s name was synonymous with prestige.
It began as an informal partnership between English furniture companies Gillows of Lancaster and Warings of Liverpool. Gillows had built a reputation in the 18th and early 19th centuries by providing high-end furniture to some of the country’s wealthiest families. In the 19th century, the Waring company had supplied furniture to major hotels and public buildings across Europe.
The two companies formally merged in 1903, becoming Waring & Gillow. With this combined expertise, the company flourished for decades. During the world wars, Waring & Gillow converted their factories to produce protective clothing, glider wings and ammunition chests, among many other products.
In 1953, retail conglomerate Great Universal Stores acquired the company and kept the Waring & Gillow name. In 1960, Great Universal Stores sold off a large share of the operation to the John Peters furniture retailer, while maintaining some of its manufacturing facilities.
In the 1980s, Waring & Gillow was merged with furniture company Maple and Co. and rebranded as Maple, Waring and Gillow. The spirit of the original Waring & Gillow companies still resonated in the sophisticated designs and quality manufacturing.

- A French 19th Century Pair of Louis XIV Style StoolsLocated in Saint-Ouen, FRA French 19th Century Pair of Large Rectangular Stools natural and carved wood. The 4 sheaths feet carved and linked by a stretcher. Louis XIV Style Napoléon III Period Circa 1880 Used Petit Point Tapestry Upholstery If the stool played a great role at the court of Louis XIV, it was also the pretext of a war... that of the stools precisely, recounted by Saint-Simon. The Duchesses fought and the Duchesse became a seat with very curious forms. There were benches and chairs, then armchairs, not to mention stools. A seat dear to the duchesses. Some fought for one, to sit in the presence of the queen. Standing, while others, sometimes cousins, were seated, was intolerable. The Duke of Saint-Simon was pleased to recount the «war of stools». This one was provoked by Mme de Chevreuse who sat, without any way, before Queen Anne of Austria...Category

- Pierre Legendre, Accord II, circa 1980By Pierre LegendreLocated in Saint-Ouen, FRPierre Legendre (1932-2009) Accord II oil on canvas circa 1980 Measures: 116 x 81 cm. Pierre Legendre, born in 1932 in Haute-Marne, moved to Paris at the age of 22. After classes at the Estienne school in Paris as well as those of the Beaux-Arts, he worked for several big houses and was the originator of logos for big brands like Hermès or Nina Ricci. He entered the academy of the painter Henri GOETZ, which allowed him to familiarize himself with abstract, geometric art. He exhibited from the 1970s, as in 1979 at UNESCO in Paris. A discreet painter, he nevertheless participated in the 80s and 90s in many artists' salons (Comparaison, Grand et Jeunes d'Aujourd'hui, Réalités Nouvelles). Pierre Legendre is of deep integrity, of great moral rigor, his geometric and abstract art also reflects a quest for spirituality and philosophical reflection. Although denying itself to belong to Concrete Art, Legendre by its taste for purism and the immateriality of the straight line is not so far removed from, among others, the art of Jean Gorin...Category
