SPECIAL SPRING SALE! 50% discount. MH’s department: Fine arts and antiques 17th-18th century. A unique well-figured William & Mary burr-walnut and inlaid china-cabinet (circa 1690) with bookmatched burr-walnut veneers of the finest quality. Particularly remarkable is the width of 210 cm. indicating this china-cabinet must have been commissioned for a rich nobleman or Eastindia merchant. The china-cabinet is surmounted by a classic cornice with double hood in the middle and rests on tapering legs on bun feet. The glazed doors enclose an interior fitted with contournated shelves to exhibit the wealth of Oriental richness. The figured veneers on the drawers are evidence of the high quality of the piece. Dutch trade with the Far East had created a particular interest in Chinese porcelain and a garniture of vases was displayed on the cornice which was specially designed for this purpose. Such a china-cabinet doubtless housed a collection of valuable curiosities and works of art; they really were works of art in themselves very much in concurrence with the Dutch protestant national character during the beginning of his reign in England (1689-1702) propagated by King-Stadholder William III. Later, under the influence of the contemporary desire to imitate among others French furniture, William III develops a more royal , (female) theatrical style on level with the opulence and grandeur of his detested and exuberant Catholic adversary, ‘Le Roi Soleil Louis XIV”. After all, these two kings not only fought frequent wars on the battle-field but also: “ “Une guerre culturelle.” Exuding quality throughout in its construction, features and choice of veneers, the piece retains beautiful rich colour and patina. Condition: In excellent antique condition and sturdy overall; the locks and mounts are original. This cabinet has recently been French-polished specifically for the American market.
