About the Item

19th Century French Napoleon III Painted Display Armoire with Original Glass and Interior France, circa 1850s–1880s A striking 19th century French Napoleon III period painted armoire, crafted in France and finished in a deep, moody black with its original warm wood interior. This stately piece features two tall paneled doors fitted with curvaceous hand-cut glass inserts, offering both display and storage opportunities. The glass retains its original waviness, indicative of mouth-blown production from the era. Carved with subtle Rococo-inspired motifs along the door frames and center stile, this armoire sits on delicate cabriole legs and features a shaped apron base, lending a touch of romantic French refinement. The bold exterior contrasts beautifully with the original patinated wood plank interior, which includes four fixed shelves and two interior drawers, making it as functional as it is elegant. Original mortise lock with working key and tassel is intact, and all hardware shows desirable oxidation consistent with age. The back panel construction reveals hand-cut dovetails, pegged joinery, and age-darkened wood with scattered wormholes—a testament to its authenticity and old-world craftsmanship. Perfect for use in a dining room, salon, or grand dressing room, this piece offers timeless French allure with practical versatility.
