Antique French Cut Brass Inlaid Cabinet Wardrobe, circa 1910

About the Item

This is an absolutely exquisite antique French rosewood and Boulle marquetry cabinet, dating from the early 20th century. It has been accomplished in rosewood and cut brass marquetry with an amazing pair of full length doors, each with four decorative Boulle panels. Each panel has an elaborate marquetry of cut brass with inset malachite and cornelian stones. The sides of the cabinets also have beautiful cut brass panels on rosewood ground. The inside of the doors have the Contra Boulle marquetry of the panels on the outside, i.e. positive and negative Boulle. The interior is of Noce Daniela walnut with a brass hanging rail and two drawers in the center, these drawers can easily be removed if you wish to use the cabinet as a full length wardrobe. The interior of the drawers is beautifully finished in green tinted burr ash. The decorative gallery and finials are of giltwood as are the mouldings around the top and base. The cabinet is complete with a beautiful working lock with the original key and has wonderful handmade brass bolts and hinges. This delicious cabinet is an outstanding example of craftsmanship and could serve any purpose. A truly gorgeous item and it deserve pride of place in any furniture collection. Dimensions in inches: Height 4 feet, 8 inches x width 2 feet, 4 inches x depth 1 foot, 1 inch. André-Charles Boulle: (1642-1732) was the French cabinetmaker who is generally considered to be the preeminent artist in the field of marquetry. His fame in marquetry led to his name being given to a fashion of inlaying known as Boulle (or in 19th century Britain, Buhl work). Boulle appears to have been originally a painter, since the first payment to him by the crown of which there is any record (1669) specifies ouvrages de peinture. He was employed for many years at Versailles, where the mirrored walls, the floors of wood mosaic, the inlaid panelling and the marquetry furniture in the Cabinet du Dauphin were regarded as his most remarkable work. These rooms were long since dismantled and their contents dispersed, but Boulle's drawings for the work are in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. His royal commissions were numerous, as we learn both from the Comptes des B timents du Roi and from the correspondence of Louvois. Not only the most magnificent of French monarchs, but foreign princes and the great nobles and financiers of his own country crowded to him with commissions, and the mot of the abbé de Marolles, Boulle y lourne en ovale, has become a stock quotation in the literature of French cabinetmaking. Rosewood is a rich warm reddish brown wood that has a distinct grain with dark brown and black outlining. One variety of Rosewood can vary significantly from another even though it is of the same species. These Rosewoods, native of India, South East Asia and Brazil, were dense and awkward to work with. It was renowned for quickly bluntening cutting tools and visibly darkening in color when over prepared. The Brazilian species of rosewood was by far the most beautifully figured and therefore it became the most sought after and rare. This was the wood of choice for the great box makers, David and Thomas Edwards who used it to veneer some of their finest pieces.

A very fine antique French Provincial burl chestnut & fruitwood armoire bonnetiere, circa 1750. The armoire is made from the most beautiful burl chestnut and various fruitwoods, to the top is a removable stepped crown, below is a raised burl panel inlaid with an ebony and fruitwood star shaped device. The cabinet has single paneled door with incredible burl chestnut panels, plenty of storage to the interior, can receive shelves or a hanging rail, the door having one long iron hinge & the original large reticulated iron lock plate with original key and lock. The door opens and closes with ease and the lock and key function perfectly. The base is fitted with a single drawer, original lock with wonderful iron handles & reticulated backplates, the lock plate elegantly decorated with two iron 'trees', the shirt having a lozenge shaped inlay with a stylized compass design, the bonnetiere is raised on tuned feet.
