Beautiful 18th Century Walnut Wood Lyonnaise Armoire

About the Item

This stunning 18th C. Lyonnaise Armoire is from the Vallee du Rhone and has beautiful hand carved grapevine and foliate motifs throughout the piece. Most likely the family who commissioned this armoire was in the wine industry. Cabinetmakers from Lyon were commissioned by the wealthy aristocracy of the area to craft only top quality pieces. Lyonnaise craftsman were renowned for their dynamic high and low relief carving with cornice and door panels strongly delineated by multiple levels of thick moldings. From the top of the arched cornice, there are three levels of thickness to the base of the frieze. The frieze panel alone measures 10” in height. The rich hand carved frieze has a central motif of a lattice basket filled with overflowing flowers, leaves, bunches of grapes, wheat, foliation and a salamander (for purity) at the right. On either side of the basket are flowing grape vines continuing seamlessly across and down the rounded corners to the middle of the feet. The doors have an asymmetrically, large, shaped moldings surrounding the tri-partite panels. Wide fielded panels of shells, acanthus leaves, c-scroll leaves and other foliate forms are above, beneath and surrounding the panels. The front door panels are of prized and rare French “Burled” walnut wood, while the side panels are walnut wood. The central dormant panel is attached to the left hand door and has two narrow vertical panels having bellflower drops. These are surrounded by small linear moldings ending in c-scroll acanthus leaves in various forms. Between the two vertical panels is what we believe to be a motif of the “Trident” (the three-pronged spear forming a characteristic attribute of the sea god Poseidon, or Neptune.) It is surrounded by small liners of acanthus leaf c-scrolls. The sides of the armoire have tri-partite plain raised panels. Due to the unique location of the Lyon many people from various cultures, including Italy, traveled through the city and its surroundings starting in the times of the Renaissance. Many skilled artisans and craftsmen passed through or remained in the area. The city became a hub for banking and commerce with the silk industry becoming the most important trade. There as in Bordeaux and Marseilles was a large upper class whose tastes needed to be satisfied. Eighteenth century Lyonnaise cabinetmakers made regional furniture primarily in the rocaille or Louis XV style, with a strong emphasis on curves, asymmetry, scrolled, and foliated motifs. They were also known for their rigorous architectural order and applying exuberant decoration as well. The curves and carvings introduced lively ornamentation that counter balanced the sometimes large proportions. This 18th C. Early 18th Century Walnut and Olive Wood Armoire from Eastern France

This unique armoire from the early 1700’s was made from walnut and olive wood and features a plinth base with central cherub mascaron along the crown. At just under 86 inches tall and 78 wide at the crown, this armoire has a more manageable size, compared to many of the very large armoires of the same period. The unique construction allows it to be easily disassembled for transport. At one point, this walnut and olive wood armoire was the property of a chocoladefabriek (chocolate factory) in Strasbourg, located in the region of Alsace, near the German border. It was originally one armoire in a pair that were commissioned in Eastern France in the early 1700s. The ebeniste who created the armoire decided to use olive wood for the door panels and some of the side panels. Olive wood was a highly valued wood among wood workers of the 18th century because of its pretty color and the richness and nuances of its veining. In the center of the crown is a foliate and floral ring surrounding a cherub mascaron. The crown and the top of the door frames have both been carved in an arch, mirroring the shape of the door moldings. Each door is mounted on iron hinges and separated by recessed molding into three uniquely shaped panels of olive wood (the rest of the armoire is constructed with walnut). Both upper panels of the doors are adorned with a series of undulating C-scrolls, while the bottom panels are rectangles with concave tops. 18th Century Italian Walnut Wood Pulpit Canopy

This large and attractive architectural piece is known as a pulpit canopy. Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around.
