About the Item

This amazing large antique wardrobe hails from France. Crafted there sometime around the year 1880, it houses a huge area for all your clothing storage needs or would make a good bookcase if you cut shelves for the inside. A large drawer on the bottom offers additional storage. Made from solid walnut, this wardrobe features a gorgeous patina and medium brown color. One of the most attractive features are the barley twist columns down the sides. These expertly turned decorations add elegant class to the armoire. Also, other hand carvings on the doors and crown subtly improve the look. Thick but simple moldings go well with the overall huge scale of this large antique wardrobe. Further adding to the armoire’s overall elegance are large bun feet in the front. The function of the huge interior should speak for itself. Whether for clothes or other items, this closet provides great storage. Also, the doors lock and include a single key. While not necessary to keep the doors closed, a lock can be a great thing to have for privacy. The key is a double throw key, so it must be turned twice in either direction to lock/unlock the doors. The doors feature beveled mirrors that we feel are not original to the piece. Inside the backs of the doors are bird’s eye maple panels. The interior does not have a hanging bar, it is simple a large open area. There are alligator brackets present you could cut shelves and supports for to use. The drawer at the bottom has a lock but no key. The door key can be used to pull this drawer open, but does not operate the lock. Overall, this piece remains in good condition. Small marks exist here and there consistent with the age of the item. The bottom left corner has a small old chip to the bottom molding. The right side of the cornice has some minor damage as well, which gives the top of that side a pitted appearance. Otherwise, this large antique wardrobe remains beautiful and elegant.
