"Provenzal" Louis XV Wardrobe, Walnut and Oak, France, 18th Century

About the Item

Although the absence of applications in gilded bronze could indicate that the provenance is not French, it is one of the so-called "Provençal furniture". These are characteristic of that area, although not exclusive to it, and are characterized by this lack of wealth in their materials and a greater simplicity in decoration compared to contemporary French furniture of, for example, Paris. It is necessary to emphasize the use of two different woods for technical reasons but, and also and especially, to emphasize the sizes and moldings. The upper part has a venerated capital framed by a straight molding at the bottom and with marked straight lines, curves and counter curves at the top. These lines, along with scrolls, are repeated symmetrically but in very marked moldings trimming the panels of the doors in three parts, the wider center. The lower zone leaves the drawer between a band with two flowers and an oval above and a symmetrical vegetal and floral motif below, which accompanies the curves of the lower skirt of the closet. These prominent curved lines with the adjacent counter curves are reminiscent of those that describe the rocks, and show the Rococo style of furniture. This one, in France, is also known like style Luis XV by the monarch in whose reign its boom took place. This artistic movement developed there between, circa 1730 and 1760, with great influence even after those dates and in all Europe. Note the differences of Provencal furniture, such as this one, with rococo court examples such as Juste-Aurèle Meissonier's designs or the works of Jean-Pierre Latz, for example. Cabinets similar to the present are preserved in the Hospice Pailloux-Haumonté (Burgundy), in the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean of Paris (inventory 13058), etc." Size: 150 x 52 x 234 cms.
