Trumeau, Console in White and Gold Painted Wood in the period Queen Mary I

About the Item

Console of wood painted in white and gold, with marbled top. Raised with mirror with oil painting on canvas with country motifs. Work of the North of Portugal of the end of the century. XVIII The furniture of the epoch Dona Maria reflects the style and aesthetics of the time when Dona Maria I reigned in Portugal, during the eighteenth century. This style of furniture is a mixture between Rococo and neoclassical, combining elaborate ornamental elements with classical forms and simpler lines. Dona Maria's tasteful pieces of furniture are usually made of hardwood, such as mahogany or rosewood, and feature a variety of hand-carved ornaments and details. The furniture is characterized by smooth and sinuous curves, elegant shapes and symmetry. The pieces of furniture to taste Dona Maria include chairs, tables, sideboards, dressers, wardrobes and beds. These furniture were designed to be elegant, functional and suitable for the sumptuous environments of the palaces and residences of the Portuguese nobility of the time. These pieces continue to be appreciated for their timeless beauty and the historical connection they represent. Some of the common elements found in furniture to Dona Maria's taste include: Smooth and elegant curves: The curved lines are a distinctive feature of this style, inspired by Rococo. They can be seen on the legs of tables and chairs, on the curves of the backs of seats, and on the shapes of tops. Elaborate ornamentation: The furniture to Dona Maria's taste presents a profusion of carved ornaments, such as floral motifs, leaves, shells and garlands. These decorative details are applied in relief to the surfaces of the furniture, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication. Symmetry: Balance and symmetry are valued in furniture to Dona Maria's taste. The furniture is designed to have a harmonious and well-proportioned appearance. Classical influences: Although the style is a mix between Rococo and Neoclassical, some classical influences can be observed, such as Ionic or Corinthian columns, triangular pediments, and classical architectural details incorporated into the pieces of furniture. Many items can be enjoyed at FRESS Museu Fundação Ricardo Espirito Santo e Silva in Azurara Palace in Lisbon.
