A wonderful, beautifully aged Tsuba - Japanese sword hand guard often circular, sometimes square, which emerged as an essential part of Japanese sword craftsmanship during the Heian period (794–1185). Initially crafted from iron or bronze, over time they became more decorative in nature and more for show as the waring Samurai clans disbanded and became part of Japan's past. The particular Tsuba features an imprinted/hammered repeating pattern of stars or cherry blossoms design perhaps. The piece has a gorgeous patina that is acquired from age and handling/use It is quite an appealing work. The piece is likely from the mid Edo Period (1603-1868). The Tsuba has a nice feel and wonderful aged texture to it. Would be a great addition to any Tsuba or Japanese Asian sword...

This large, beautiful and bold blue and white platter is Japanese Imari from the Edo period (18th century). This impressive early porcelain Imari ware is saturated in rich cobalt blue underglaze hand painted in an unusual cross pattern. It features four round medallions of lotus flowers and landscape vinettes and finishes in blue rimmed scalloped edges. A hand painted leaf design is repeated on the underside. Condition: Very good condition especially for it's age. One tiny chip is touched up. Nice wear and firing stilt marks on back. Measurements: 16" diameter x 2" depth Weight: 6 lbs. Exquisite pair of mid Edo period large Japanese Ko-Imari porcelain vases in an attractive baluster shape boasting intricate patterns of floral and highly detailed geometric motifs that beautifully intertwine on the body of the handsome vases, creating captivating landscapes in dark blue, orange and gold details throughout, which is characteristic of Imari porcelain from the Edo Period. The two scalloped cartouches on each vase with highly decorated and elaborate borders recreate the pine, plum and bamboo motif known as “Sho-Chiku-Bai” or the “Three Friends of Winter.” The impressive pine trees in cobalt blue decorated with gold details dominate the landscape on white background. This is truly a wonderful piece with clear age and a nice patina to it. Very unique. We have not seen another quite like it. The monk appears to have glass eyes which gives his expression a very humanistic feel. The head is removable (please see the last image). From a collection of Japanese arts and artifacts.
