Organic Modern Furniture

ORGANIC MODERN STYLE

Organic modern furniture is characterized by clean lines, an overall uncomplicated aesthetic and a prioritizing of natural, sustainable materials, such as wood and stone. There are lots of earth tones and natural-world textures rather than bright color palettes or fabrics embellished with busy patterns.

Organic furniture is minimalist and, owing to the ideas of venerable architect Frank Lloyd Wright, designed for warm spaces that promote harmony between human habitation and the great outdoors. Organic modern design, including in furniture and architecture, emerged in the 1930s.

Designers such as Andrianna Shamaris, Alguacil & Perkoff and Jörg Pietschmann — all known for organic modern design — have created furniture that brings dynamic and unpredictable energy to home interiors while emphasizing the importance of a relationship with the natural world.

Striking an appealing balance between our living spaces and nature doesn't have to be an arduous task — the broad selection of original organic modern furniture on 1stDibs includes solid wood tables, bamboo seating options, hand-knotted wall tapestries and more.

Colonnade I, a Unique Ceramic Sculptural Vase in Pink & White by Jo Taylor
Located in London, GB
Colonnade I is a unique handmade coloured stoneware ceramic sculptural vase in dusky pink and white by the British artist Jo Taylor. The central form has been thrown on the potter's wheel and also hand-built, then adorned with architectural inspired flourishes and swirls. For Taylor, the making process hugely influences the final outcome of each piece. The way the raw material behaves and how it responds to her is intrinsic to the shapes & marks made. Clay pieces are made & marked with tools as the potter's wheel rotates until a collection of loops & curls of varying sizes are amassed. More clay is manipulated by hand to create further pieces with suggestions of direction. When the clay has dried enough to be handled assembly begins, by adding & securing each piece whilst paying attention to the physical & aesthetic sense of balance. As the work evolves decisions are made regarding the composition from every angle until the work is complete. Taylor’s inspiration comes from highly decorative architectural features such as ornate plaster ceilings, wrought iron and carved stone. Living near the Georgian city of Bath (UK) provides a rich visual resource, although it can be said that she will seek out such details wherever she goes. Regular visits to our larger cities such as Liverpool (UK) and London (UK) offer ornament that can be experienced on a grander scale with their historic buildings such as the Sefton Park Palm House...

Oscar Stonorov and Willo von Moltke Organic Design Coffee Table
By Oscar Stonorov and Willo von Moltke
Located in New York, NY
Boat-shaped coffee table with beveled edges in silvered walnut by the team of German-born American architects Oscar Stonorov and Willo von Moltke, designed for the Museum of Modern Art's 1941 Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition, and produced in very small numbers by Red Lion Furniture of Pennsylvania. Per the MoMA catalog, “a design may be called organic when there is an harmonious organization of the parts within the whole, according to structure, material, and purpose. Within this definition there can be no vain ornamentation or superfluity, but the part of beauty is none the less great—in ideal choice of material, in visual refinement, and in the rational elegance of things internded for use.” The suite of furnishings designed by Stonorov and von Moltke---including a vanity, coffee table, dining set, bed, nightstand, and case pieces--won honorable mention at the seminal competition and received a preferred placement at the MoMA exhibition itself. The winning entries in the competition, which included the iconic seating and unit furniture by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, were showcased at eleven department stores across the country--notably Bloomingdale's and Kaufmann's--and were intended for serial production, but America's entry into WWII a month after the opening of the exhibition, along with higher than expected price points across the board meant that few pieces were actually made outside the ones initially sent to the participating department stores. This was especially true for the Stonorov and von Moltke suite, which wound up being among the most expensive items...

Glass Chair Three by Guillermo Santoma
Located in Copenhagen, DK
Guillermo Santomà. MA in design from Elisava Barcelona. Previous exhibitions include Wer Haus and Palais de Tokyo. Santomà attracted attention to his work after his total transformation of Casa Horta – an architectonic, artistic intervention in a traditional horta-house from the beginning of the 20th century. Santomà places himself somewhere in-between architecture and design and creates complete environments for his work to act in. With the artistic devise 'to create is to destroy', Santomà works to deconstruct the fixed images of design. Never pre-sketching his work, his work is a constant process of deformation and creation. From 18 March 2016 Etage Projects presents the young Spanish designer Guillermo Santomà (1984). For his exhibition Mirage at Etage Projects he exhibits beautifully shaped glass chairs...

Blooming Terra, a Ceramic Decorative Vase in Brown and Grey by Maarten Vrolijk
Located in London, GB
Blooming Terra is an earthenware ceramic decorative vase in brown, grey and pink by the Dtuch artist Maarten Vrolijk. Vrolijk approaches his ceramic artworks using the surface of his created forms as a canvas, yet with his medium being clay, it instantly adds a depth and relief that is more substantial than its painterly counterpart. Keeping his mark-making intuitive and immediate, the material reacts in its own unique way, dragging and creating small trails of the displaced clay, embellishing his own lines. It is these unexpected structures that create in the artist’s eye, additional unique beauty in each piece. Enhanced by extra layers of colors and glazes, the resulting artworks combine spontaneity, charm, naivety, nature and storytelling. Maarten Vrolijk is an Amsterdam-based artist and designer who considers it important to elaborate on the simple, unequivocal nature of a product or artwork and has been creating his works for over 25 years. His aesthetic and ‘art language...

Warp & Fade 017, a Unique Blue, Purple & Red Glass Sculpture by Liam Reeves
Located in London, GB
Warp & Fade 017 is a unique handblown glass vessel with fine white cane detail created by the British artist Liam Reeves. Incorporating layers of glass, the top colours in blue and red merge to create a larger spectrum, as the hues blur from one to the other. The entire piece is finally sandblasted creating a soft satin, diffused finish. Liam Reeves has been making glass professionally since 1998 when he graduated from Middlesex University with a BA (Hons) in three-dimensional design. During this time he has honed his skills whilst working in the glass industry for some of the best glassmakers in the UK. In 2009 Reeves studied for an MA at the RCA in order to explore the creative possibilities of the medium of glassblowing. He is currently hot-glass technician at the very same and prestigious Royal College of Art in London. While at the RCA Liam discovered a passion for investigating pivotal techniques from glassblowing’s two-millennia of rich history. From the mould blowing of ancient Rome to the complex goblet-making techniques of Renaissance Venice...
